Taken from Xbox AchievementsIn an interview with GameSpot, Leon S. Kennedy's voice actor Matt Mercer confirmed he won't be taking on the role for Resident Evil 7. In the interview, Mercer confirms he has had no involvement in Resident Evil 7 directly, and that he believes that Capcom wants to 'scale back' the classic cameos. He continues: "But I think it's also good of them, especially coming off of [Resident Evil 6] and its lukewarm reception, to go ahead and re-establish their roots and maybe start an original story. And if they decide that that does well, maybe they can then marry it in with the previous stories." Leon has appeared in three mainline Resident Evil games so far: Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 6. If you want to see some story and game details that were leaked by a ratings board last week, check out our report here - but be warned: spoilers abound. Resident Evil 7 will launch January 24th for Xbox One, PC and PS4/PSVR

Lukewarm reception? Shit reception.
Keep Leon out of the game. No offense to Leon or the voice actor.
but keep him out of it.

We don't need Leon popping in doing his silly backflips. If it was RE2 Leon, I'd be fine. #makeleongreatagain

Thank God. If we're going to do this reboot thing we need to go all in. No characters from the previous games, unless it's flashbacks to cut scenes.

I think if anything we're just going to see references or callbacks to them. I'm ok with a new character and setting that's influenced by the main story line. To me, it makes the world feel more fleshed out and as if other people could survive and overcome the horrors that plague the franchise. We've seen it before with newer or different characters being added to the familiar roster of faces that are already established within the franchise.
I just hope it's not a silent protagonist. That would really irk me in a RE title which are known for memorable characters at the very least.

I'm fine with new characters. I think I read one of the developers saying that they were doing it because the old characters all seem invincible at this point, and I think that's really true. It'll be nice to have vulnerable characters again.

I do want to see these characters in the future and if, God forbid the series actually gets an ending to everything that's happened, then I definitely want to see the old characters return. They can easily make them vulnerable again if they took the time to write themselves out of the corner they currently have themselves in when it comes to the original characters. I know Leon has become the poster boy of being Mr. Cool Bad Ass of the series he's still my favorite character.
I'd just rather see them make these characters vulnerable through gameplay again. There's no rule stating they can't use them anymore just because they survived some over the top shit in the 6th entry. All it takes is smart writing and good gameplay to put them back in the believeable state they once were in.

I'm half and half personally. Our beloved RE needed a reboot after 6. Though to me its never been a RE game without a pop up from one of our favs.
Not saying Leon should pop up, even if Ada or freaking Jake popped up somehow, I'd still be happy as long as the main focus is rebooting and making a good game.
Not very happy about the first person view though

I see the appearance of previous characters in any role other than flashbacks as being a hindrance to the reboot of the franchise. The moment they appear people will (1) form the expectation that a huge Michael Bay action sequence is going to take place, or (2) think that they are safe from the monsters because our Action Star will obviously keep us safe. The only possible exception to this is Rebecca, and maybe Claire, as Rebecca hasn't been in anything since RE0 and Claire in Rev 2 wasn't an over the top action hero.

I felt Rebecca should have gotten an appearance in another game!

I also didn't get any action hero vibe from anyone in Zero Hour.

Rebecca I think is going to show up as she has had nothing to do with anything since RE0 as well as some leaked images recently Then again rumors are just that so only time will tell

As a long standing Leon fan I'm disappointed because whenever that super cuts having motherfucker shows up it's a pretty good time. It's probably for the best if Capcom is serious about this new direction thing, I'm sure we'll see these characters again in future games but maybe in smaller/cameo type roles if they want to focus the series on having vulnerable characters again. I'm sure he's off in some far off country suplexing people like a champion though, he always needs to be fucking shit up or shooting political leaders in the face, he simply cannot rest. Never be resting.
